SCR and Digitizing
The Supplemental Course Resources (SCR)
Supplemental Course Resources is a service offered by the Library to make additional course materials, of your choice, available to your students through UCMCROPs or other course management system. The Library ensures that fair use and copyright are followed, digitizes the materials, and makes the materials available for posting electronically.
The Library is working with University Readers for the 2007-2008 school year to provide additional options for providing resources for students.
Pilot Program for 2007/2008
To date, UC Merced Library has provided scanning services and cleared permissions for the posting of materials needed for individual courses in UCMCROPS.
In an effort to expand the capabilities of this program, we are partnering with University Readers (UR) to offer options when permissions are needed.
The result is a hybrid model with materials posted in UCMCROPs (items that fall under fair use or to which we subscribe) AND a link to purchase a mini-print reader which includes any materials that require permissions clearance. The mini-reader is made available to students for purchase.
In addition, a full reader is made available for students to purchase. The full course reader includes both the items posted in UCMCROPs and those items available in the mini print course reader. This is for students who want the convenience of all items bundled into a full course reader.
If you would like a full reader with a digital delivery option, we can work with University Readers to provide a reader in this format.
For only print readers, please contact the UC Merced Bookstore.
Available Options:
- As in our current practice, provide freely available materials in UCMCROPs to students.
- NEW: Give students purchase options. For those items not available for free, provide students a link to purchase a mini-print pack reader. View additional explanation with a sample screen shot. Also provide the convenience of a full print pack reader.
- Choose to make readers available in digital, print/digital formats for students to purchase.
- You can choose to use the SCR program as we have offered in the past. We will still offer links to materials in UCMCROPs so students can access these materials needed for your course free of charge.
- The UC Merced Library staff will scan materials and make submissions on your behalf to University Readers.
Advantages:
- alternative fulfillment options when some materials are not available through fair use or the Library's subscriptions
- a faster turnaround time for securing permissions - the benefit of working with an established reader company rather than dealing directly with rightsholders
- in the hybrid model, the convenience and option of a full print reader copy for those who prefer not to read online
Making a Request
Submit the following items to the Library Services Desk on the 2nd floor or send to the Library through campus mail (Attn: SCR):
- completed SCR Form
- material to be digitized
- course syllabus
If you are not providing a copy of the material to be digitized, you may submit the form via email.
Time Needed for Submissions
Library staff process requests as they are received. Please submit materials far in advance to ensure their availability for your courses. Delays may occur when the form is incomplete, a resource is not submitted, copyright clearance needs to be pursued, or if the material must be obtained from an outside source.
Delivery of Digitized Material
We will contact you when the material is ready. Materials will be sent to you through campus mail unless indicated otherwise in the comment section of the SCR Form.

Other Digitization Services
The Library can convert material into digital format for use by the campus community provided
- there are no digital versions currently available (i.e. the title is not available for purchase in DVD format)
- there are no physical protections or limits inhibiting reproduction or reformatting
- it is in accordance with copyright law (i.e. an original copy is submitted for conversion)

- Flatbed scanning (up to 13" by 19" size)

Requests will be fulfilled in 10 working days; rush requests may be fulfilled if at all possible.
