Connecting from Off Campus

How to Set Up the VPN Client for Mac

Anyone using a computer on a UC network can automatically access UC Systemwide Resources. The UC Merced Library subscribes to these resources via the CDL (California Digital Library).

To access these resource when off campus, students, faculty and staff can connect through the Virtual Private Network (VPN).

1. When you download the VPN Client, the file will be in a package. Click the iconopen.

2. Save the Cisco VPN Client Software to the Macintosh HD. It will automatically be added to your Applications file.

3. Installer will ask for your password to the computer, NOT your UC Merced password. Do not worry if you do not see this screen.

4. Once the file is installed, go to the Applications folder to access the VPN Client.

5. When you open the VPN Client, select NEW.

6. This is the hardest part, enter the information exactly as it appears in the screenshot. The password is ucmstaff

7.Enter your username and password. Your username is the first part of UC Merced email before the @, and your password is the one associated with that account.

8. Once you have entered your information, this screen will appear. Select Continue. You are now connected to the VPN Client.

Web Accelerators and Access Problems

Web accelerators such as Google Web Accelerator or DownThemAll may interfere with your ability to access the Library’s content. Two problems can occur. Your IP address may not be recognized even when you are using the VPN, or you may be flagged for excessive downloading causing your IP to be blocked. Uninstall web accelerators to avoid these potential problems.
