Connecting from Off Campus
Downloading the VPN Client for Windows.
Anyone using a computer on a UC network can automatically access UC Systemwide Resources. The UC Merced Library subscribes to these resources via the CDL (California Digital Library).
To access these resource when off campus, students, faculty and staff can connect through the Virtual Private Network (VPN). Select the appropriate VPN Client download.

How to Set Up the VPN Client for Windows. Instructions for Mac Users.

1. When you download the VPN Client the file will be zipped. Unzip the file. |

2. Once the file is unzipped, you will be asked to restart your computer. |
 |
3. Once you have restarted your computer, click on the VPN Client Setup icon on your Desktop. |

4. When you open it, the following screen will appear. |

5. You will be asked to select a destination folder. Do not change the destination folder that is atomatically selected. |

6. It might take a few minutes to install the software. |
 |
7. Select Finish. Go to Start > Programs > Cisco Systems VPN Client. |
 |
8. Once you select the program, you will see this window pop up. Select Connection Entries and then from the drop down menu select NEW. |

9. When the following window appears, enter the information exactly as it is entered below. The password is ucmstaff. |
 |
10. Once you have set up the connection. You will see it listed under Connection Entry. To connect make sure UC Merced VPN is highlighted then click Connect. |

11. You will now see when to enter YOUR USERNAME and PASSWORD. Once you are connected this box will disappear, and you will have access to all of the UC Merced library databases and e-books. |
Web Accelerators and Access Problems
Web accelerators such as Google Web Accelerator or DownThemAll may interfere with your ability to access the Library’s content. Two problems can occur. Your IP address may not be recognized even when you are using the VPN, or you may be flagged for excessive downloading causing your IP to be blocked. Uninstall web accelerators to avoid these potential problems.
