Introduction

This tutorial will help you:

  • understand the function of the VPN client.
  • help you install the VPN on your computer.

What is the VPN?

Use the active webpage on your right to complete the tutorial.

Downloading the VPN

Downloading the VPN is easy. From the library home page, go to the bottom right-hand side:

  • Click on the Connect Off Campus (VPN) link.

arrow pointing to Connect Off-Campus VPN link

  • Click on the Download the VPN link.

Installing the VPN

To install the VPN:

  • Select the appropriate operating system.
  • Installation instructions vary by operating system.
  • Keep instructions open in a separate tab or window during the installation.

Configuring the VPN

Although the screen may look a little bit different between operating systems, the steps to configure the VPN client software are pretty much the same.

Below is a screenshot of the information required to configure the VPN client (the password is ucmstaff).

You will need this information only for the initial configuration. Once the VPN is configured, you will use your UCMnetID to log in to the VPN.

Launching the VPN

Depending on your operating system, the VPN will either appear as an icon on your desktop (PC) or as a program in your applications folder (Mac).

To launch the VPN, click on the icon or application. You will be prompted to log in with your  UCMnetID (jdoe7) and password (same as your UCM email). Once you are logged in, open a browser. You should be connected to the campus network.

Troubleshooting VPN Issues

If you are prompted to pay for articles or to log in again,  you are probably not connected to the campus network. Refresh your browser, and double check that you are connected with the VPN.

Questions? Contact the UCM IT Help Desk at helpdesk@ucmerced.edu or 209.228.4357 if you need further assistance with the VPN.
