Introduction

This tutorial will show you how to find film reviews in Film Literature Index, one of the library's databases. To demonstrate, we'll be searching for reviews for the movie Batman Forever.

Use the window with the UC Merced Library website and the window with the instructions to complete this tutorial.

Finding Databases with Movie Reviews

Film reviews are available in several library databases. From the library's home page follow these steps to see a list of those databases:

  • Click the Databases tab on the Quick SEARCH.

  • Click on the link to See all databases (below the search box).
  • Click the Movie Reviews link under Database Types.

This will show you a list of databases where movie reviews appear.

Searching in Film Literature Index

Film Literature Index is a great place to find film reviews. Follow these steps to see how it's done:

  • Scroll down and click on the link to Film Literature Index
  • Click Advanced Search at the top of the page
  • Type or cut and paste "Batman Forever" in the first search box.
  • Below the search boxes look for Document Type under Filter Results By >>
  • In the drop-down menu next to Document Type, select reviews.
  • Click Filter
  • Use the UC-eLinks button to navigate to the full text of the review.

Using Other Databases to find Movie Reviews

You may find movie reviews in other databases besides Film Literature Index. Just use the same techniques we've practiced in this tutorial to find them:

  • Enter the title of the movie in "quotation marks" in the search box.
  • Look for a Document Type limiter to narrow your search to reviews.
